As a participating contractor in the PSE&G GridSmart Battery Program, Public Service Solar offers eligible residential customers a $5,000 upfront rebate and optional interest-free (0% APR) on-bill repayment of up to $25,000 to install a home battery system. In order to participate, homeowners agree to let PSE&G dispatch their batteries during high-demand grid events.
The $5,000 rebate is applied directly to the participating contractor’s invoice, so you do not have to wait for a rebate check. If you qualify for on-bill repayment, you can pay the remaining eligible cost through your PSE&G bill over 84 months. Some income-qualified customers may qualify for a 120-month term on projects above $10,000. Approval and program rules apply.

How we work with you
A battery is personal. We start with what you want to keep running during an outage, then guide you through the system design, GridSmart application, and installation.

We listen
We ask what an outage interrupts in your home. Is the priority your refrigerator, lights, and internet? Do you also want to back up air conditioning, a well pump, or other large loads? We review any existing solar and explain what battery backup can and cannot do.

We compare Tesla and Enphase for your backup goals and electrical setup. We explain which circuits the system can support, identify any work needed to pair it with solar, and provide a home-specific quote showing the GridSmart rebate and payment options.

Our in-house team handles the installation, local permitting, and GridSmart application, then coordinates the required inspections. We help you get familiar with the monitoring app and remain your point of contact for workmanship and service questions.
What do you agree to with GridSmart?
In return for the rebate and optional financing, you agree to let PSE&G signal your battery during scheduled GridSmart Events. The battery supplies some of the electricity your home would otherwise draw from the grid. It does not export stored energy to the grid. PSE&G uses the Uplight Flex platform to coordinate participation.
PSE&G may call up to 100 events per year, each lasting up to four hours. You receive advance notice. Under the default event setting, the battery stops discharging at 20%, leaving a reserve for an unexpected outage. PSE&G does not call events during an outage. You can opt out for an emergency or another extenuating circumstance, but regular participation is part of the program; excessive opt-outs can affect enrollment and may trigger repayment obligations under the program terms.
What batteries are we offering through GridSmart?
Public Service Solar is featuring Tesla Powerwall 3 and Enphase IQ Battery 10C for this program. Both are qualifying options. We size the system around what you want to run during an outage, the available installation space, and any existing solar equipment. One battery may be enough for some homes; others benefit from additional storage or power output.
Tesla Powerwall 3
Powerwall 3 combines a 13.5 kWh battery with an integrated inverter. Depending on its configured output setting, one unit can deliver up to 11.5 kW of continuous power (48 A at 240 V). It uses the Tesla app for monitoring and carries a 10-year product warranty. A single Powerwall 3 can suit a homeowner who wants substantial output from one unit, although the actual circuits and appliances it can back up depend on the final electrical design.

The right battery is the one that fits your home
Both Tesla and Enphase can provide dependable backup, but the specifications alone cannot tell you which system belongs in your home. The answer depends on the loads you want to protect, how much backup time you want, and whether the battery will connect to an existing solar system. Adding a second battery may increase storage, output, or both, depending on the equipment.

GridSmart Battery Program FAQs
Do I need solar panels?
No. A qualifying battery can charge from the grid and provide backup without solar. If you already have solar, we will check how it can pair with the battery and whether it can recharge the battery during an outage. New solar panels themselves are not covered by the GridSmart rebate or on-bill repayment.
When do I receive the $5,000 rebate?
You do not wait for a check or receive a credit on your utility bill. For an eligible project, the rebate is shown as a $5,000 deduction on the participating contractor’s invoice. PSE&G pays the contractor after the required program steps are complete.
Is the rebate available for each battery?
No. PSE&G allows multiple batteries at a home, but there is one $5,000 rebate per eligible account, not $5,000 per battery.
Can I get a battery with $0 down?
Potentially. If the full remaining eligible project cost is approved for 0% on-bill repayment, there may be no upfront payment for that eligible amount. Approval, any prior PSE&G repayment balance, and costs outside the program determine the actual amount due upfront.
Does PSE&G run a credit check for on-bill repayment?
According to PSE&G’s contractor training, it does not use a credit bureau check to determine on-bill repayment eligibility. PSE&G still reviews program eligibility and any existing on-bill repayment balance.
Will a GridSmart Event lower my electric bill?
Not automatically. During an event, the battery powers your home and reduces how much electricity you draw from PSE&G at that time. The battery may recharge afterward, so using it during an event does not by itself mean you used less electricity overall or saved money. A compatible time-of-use rate may create a separate opportunity to save by charging and discharging at different prices. PSE&G describes GridSmart primarily as a backup-power program, not a guaranteed bill-savings program.
What if the power goes out after an event?
PSE&G’s default event setting leaves 20% of the battery’s capacity in reserve. Your available backup time still depends on how charged the battery is and how much power your home uses. PSE&G does not schedule a GridSmart Event during an outage.
Can I opt out of an event or leave the program?
You can opt out of an event for an emergency or other extenuating circumstance. Regular participation and an internet connection are expected. Excessive opt-outs or leaving the program can carry repayment consequences under PSE&G’s terms. If you leave while an on-bill repayment balance remains, that balance becomes due; a portion or all of the rebate may also be repayable depending on the circumstances and time enrolled. Review the participation agreement before signing.
